We had a young engineer come with a drawing for a side extender. He had around eight parts to fit on that rack. We discussed how he could reposition the parts to optimize the design for more parts. He made those adjustments, but in the process, he added a lot of extra steel to support the parts.
When we received the parts and saw how heavy they were, we were able to redesign so they could use half the amount of steel in the upper portion of the rack (not the base). This reduced the installation time from an hour to just 10 minutes.
Can you imagine the savings in steel and installation time, not to mention the reduced freight costs due to lighter loads and increased part density per truckload?
